If you want to get a skunk out from under the shed, you should first consider that the animal might leave on its own. Skunks are mostly inactive during the winter, then, when spring comes, they leave their dens. Females raising their kits will also leave in early to mid-summer. So, the easiest thing you can do is sit tight.
Alternatively, you can try practising some humane harassment. This means to bother the skunk out of its den. Try turning on some talk radio and leaving it next to the den all day. The noise will make it harder for them to sleep, and the voices might scare them off. You can also point a flashlight towards the den or try surrounding the den with dirty cat litter or rags soaked in apple cider vinegar. The smell will have them believe that there are predators nearby, and they will move.
How to Keep Skunks Out for Good
You can verify if the skunks have left by sticking a ball of paper in the den’s entrance. If the paper is still there after 3 days, they are gone. Once you know that the skunks are out from under the shed, dig a trench along its sides, about a foot deep. Then, screw a thick, quarter inch or half-inch mesh into the sides of the shed. Galvanized steel works best. Make sure the mesh touches the bottom of the trench. When you’re done, bury the sides of the shed. Skunks will no longer be able to dig underneath. The same logic applies to porches and other structures.
After you’ve skunk-proofed the structure, you can make your yard a little less attractive to skunks. Secure your garbage cans with tight-fitting lids and bungee cords. Pick up fallen fruit and harvest your produce on time. You may also want to stop feeding the birds and don’t leave any pet food out overnight. The less food there is available, the better.
