Dogs cannot get rabies solely through a skunk spray. For a dog to become rabid, the dog must be bitten where the virus directly enters the bloodstream. Skunks are often feared for their skunk spray because of the rancid smell they release from their scent glands. It may take up to a few days to a few weeks to notice visible symptoms. If you do come across a skunk, you can pretty much assume that it carries rabies. However there is a difference between a skunk carrying rabies and being rabid. When you see one of the following signs, you are dealing with a rabid skunk:
- Foaming
- Walk with a limp
- Disoriented
- Careless or fearless
- Tame
- Walking around aimlessly
There is no fool-proof way to prevent your dog from getting bitten by skunks, but you can take some precautions by keeping the dog on a leash, making sure that the dog is in your view at all times, and taking the dog to familiar open field areas. In terms of the backyard, you can recognize the following signs when it comes to spotting skunk presence in yards.
Skunks have a habit of tunnel burrows under existing structures close to a base so they can go in and out when they please. They also tunnel near vegetation and sheds. You must recognize these signs. You might see tracks, dirt that is spread around the grass. If you have flowerbeds you might notice that they have been trampled on.
